The Effectiveness Of Using Buzz Group In Teaching Speaking Toward Students’ Speaking Ability Of The First Grade Students Of Man Kunir Blitar (Pbing-45)

Mastering speaking skill needs a lot of practices, and to speak English well and fluently needs a long process. Hence, the appropriate method of the teaching and learning is very important to help students master the speaking ability. Therefore, buzz group is determined to be a method of teaching speaking in this research. Buzz group is an activity which arouse the students to talk confidently in the class. This activity invites the students to convey their ideas freely in a small group before every student speaks in front of the teacher to express their thought. In this method, the students are divided into six groups which every group consists of approximately five people each. From this activity, it is expected that the students will get a lot of informations so that they are not anxious when they convey the information about certain topic given by the teacher.

The formulation of the research problems were: 1) How is  the students’ speaking ability when they are taught without using buzz group? 2) How is the students’ speaking ability when they are taught by using buzz group? 3) Are there any significant different scores on speaking ability between the students who are taught by using buzz group and those who are taught without using buzz group?
The objectives of this research were to: 1) describe the students’ speaking ability when they are taught without using buzz group, 2) define the students’ speaking ability when they are taught by using buzz group, 3) find out the significant different scores on speaking ability between the students who are taught by using buzz group and those who are taught without using buzz group.
Research Method: 1) the research design in this study was quasi experimental design with quantitative approach with non randomized, pretest-posttest, 2) the population of this study was all students of class X at MAN Kunir Blitar, 3) the samples were class XA consisting of thirty two students who are as the experimental group, and class XB consisting of thirty six students who are as the control group, 4) the research instrument was test, 5) the data analysis was using t-test.
The result pointed out that the students’ mean score of the experimental group in pretestwas 56.6, and the students’ mean score of control group in pretest was 54.9. Meanwhile, the students’ mean score of the experimental group in posttest was 68.6, and the students’ mean score of the control group in posttest was 62.6. The result of the statistical computation using t-test revealed that the obtained t0was 4.72. Then the t-values of t0.05were about 1.67, and the t- values of t0.01 was about 2.39. Therefore, the calculated value (4.72) was much larger than the t-values (t0.05= 1.67 and t0.01 = 2.39), so there was significant difference in the scores between the students who were taught using buzz group, and those who were not taught using buzz group. It means that Ha states that the students of the class X at MAN Kunir Blitar who are taught by using buzz group get better speaking ability than those who are not taught by using buzz group is accepted. While, Ho which states that the students of the class X at MAN Kunir Blitar who are taught using buzz group do not get better speaking ability than those who are not taught using buzz group is rejected. In other words, buzz group can be used as an alternative to teach speaking and to improve students’ speaking ability to the students at the senior high school level.
